Southeast US ports brace for Hurricane Dorian: Update
Updates port conditions and category of Hurrican Dorian.
New York, 3 September (Argus) — The US Coast Guard (USCG) closed the port at Brunswick, Georgia, and the Florida ports of Canaveral and Jacksonville as Hurricane Dorian, downgraded to a category 2 storm this afternoon, moved up the east coast.
The USCG said it expected to close the port at Savannah, Georgia tonight, and it expects to close the port of Charleston, South Carolina, and the North Carolina ports of Wilmington and Morehead City tomorrow. The USCG ordered an evacuation of Charleston and coastal South Carolina yesterday.
The Florida ports of Tampa and Manatee, Key West, Miami, Everglades and Palm Beach were reopened without restrictions this afternoon.
The storm path turned away from a direct hit on Florida over the weekend as it strengthened to a category 5 storm and battered the Bahamas. The most recent forecast had the center of the storm remaining just off the coast of Florida through tomorrow as it travels north, before starting to turn toward the northeast.
