Five coal ships load at U.S.’ Dominion Terminal in week ending Friday, one more at pier
Dominion Terminal Associates loaded and exported 277,669 st of coal on five coal carriers at its Newport News, Virginia, pier in the week that will end Friday, up from two that exported 110,746 st in the prior week, company data showed Friday.
The terminal, which is owned by Contura Energy (65%) and Arch Coal (35%) and served by CSX, loaded the Seven Lady with 53,792 st of coal on March 3, the DTA data showed. The ship is expected to arrive in Gijon, Spain, on March 15, according to data from Platts cFlow trade flow software.
On March 5, the BW Acorn loaded 86,529 st and is expected to reach Hamburg, Germany, on March 18, according to the company and cFlow.
The Saronic Champion also loaded 66,679 st of coal on March 5, which already had 87,529 st onboard. It is currently anchored near Cape Charles, outside of Hampton Roads, according to cFlow.
The TR Infinity loaded 27,790 st on Thursday and is currently located outside of Norfolk, Virginia, while 42,879 st was loaded onto the Lowlands Orchid Friday, and that vessel is expected to reach Singapore on April 22.
The Lake Dawn is currently anchored at the pier, and as of 2 pm EST, had not started loading its scheduled 86,806 st.
Including the Saronic Champion, five coal carriers are currently anchored near Cape Charles, outside of Hampton Roads, that are waiting to load coal at one of the region’s three terminals, but only one is currently scheduled to load at DTA. Last week, five were also waiting near Cape Charles.
So far this month, six ships have departed DTA with 316,898 st onboard. In February, 15 ships departed DTA with 932,958 st aboard, down from 17 in January that exported 1.16 million st.
Since January 1, a total of 37 ships have left DTA with 2.41 million st of coal onboard.
Including the ships at the pier and those departed, DTA currently has 25 ships scheduled to arrive in March that will load 1.5 million st of coal, while another 25 are expected in April to export 1.31 million st, according to company data.
DTA is the second largest of the three coal terminals in the Hampton Roads region. In 2018, the terminal exported 15.82 million st of coal, up 23.4% year on year, according to data from the Virginia Maritime Association. The 15.82 million st was only behind Norfolk Southern-owned Lamberts Point terminal, which exported 17.16 million st.
